More than 200 delegates, representing 130 suppliers, took part in a Nu-Tech organised HMNB Clyde Capital Infrastructure Industry Day earlier this month in what has been described as a ‘major success’.

HM Naval Base Clyde – commonly known throughout the Navy as Faslane – is the Royal Navy’s main presence in Scotland. It is home to the core of the Submarine Service, including the nation’s nuclear deterrent, and the new generation of hunter-killer submarines.

Organised on behalf of the UK’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation (part of the Ministry of Defence) and the Royal Navy, the one-day Industry Day in Erskine, Renfrewshire was meant to inform potential bidders and others in the supply chain about the procurement process necessary to support the upcoming Clyde Capital Infrastructure Programme.

This process is intended to put in place a Framework for delivery of infrastructure to support the work on the naval base over the next 10 years including major refurbishment of existing infrastructure and new facilities to support of future activities.

Alongside presentations given by key staff from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation and the Clyde Naval Base, more than 30 of the participating companies also chose to demonstrate their capabilities in a parallel Supplier Networking Exhibition giving attendees from across the supply chain a chance to see available technologies and where future opportunities might exist for collaboration.

Speaking after the event, Nu-Tech explained: “The Industry Day received an unprecedented number of applications from companies wanting to attend to the point where it was over-subscribed and we simply couldn’t accommodate any more due to limitations on the size of the venue. Having pulled the event together in just a matter of weeks we were delighted to have achieved such a high turnout of companies and hope the information they received will help them to decide if they have the necessary skills to bid for the infrastructure work at HMNB Clyde when it becomes available.”

Nu-Tech is pleased to have forged greater links with the education & skills sector over the last 12 months in what has been a busy year for its event programme.

Not only has the company become a regular guest lecturer in support of the Hospitality, Tourism & Event Management Faculty at the University of Sunderland, but it was also invited to support the National Skills Academy (Nuclear) in their selection of suitable candidates for the prestigious 2017 Apprenticeship Award Scheme.

Nu-Tech’s Managing Director, Lisa Jones-Taylor, has visited Sunderland University as a guest speaker on several occasions as part of the University’s programme to help students learn more about the practical skills of event management in industry. More recently she was also invited by the National Skills Academy (Nuclear) to join a judging panel for the 2017 UK Nuclear Skills Award to help select some of the best learners across the country in the categories of ‘SME Apprentice of the Year’ and ‘Maintenance Apprentice of the Year’.

She commented: “Sunderland University’s Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Events is ranked one of the best in the country in its field because their course has been developed in close collaboration with the events industry and with companies such as Nu-Tech. Practical skills and a basic understanding of the needs of industry are vital if students are to successfully complete their studies and go on to compete in the open market. This is also true of the national apprenticeship scheme which sees youngsters gain both hands-on experience as well as vocational qualifications – many of whom then progress on to University having already gained these essential abilities.”

She concluded: “We are delighted to be building stronger links with the education & skills sector and I believe it is incumbent on all of us to pass on knowledge and nurture students; as well as reward those youngsters who go on to inspire others”.

Another successful Nu-Tech-organised exhibition was held this month (June 2016) with nearly 40 companies exhibiting their wares at the Scottish Nuclear Supply Chain Project Meet the Buyer event in the Dunblane Hydro Hotel, Dunblane, Perthshire.

The annual event, which was supported by Scottish Enterprise and the Highlands & Islands Enterprise and co-organised with the TWI, was aimed at enabling Scottish-based companies to learn more about procurement opportunities across the UK nuclear sector. With updates given by the NDA, Sellafield Ltd, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd, Horizon Nuclear, EDF Energy and Tier 1 contractors, delegates were also able to discuss specific opportunities with exhibitors and nominated ‘buyers’ from several key organisations.

If you would like to express an interest in next year’s Scottish Nuclear Supply Chain Project – either to exhibit or attend as a delegate – please contact our enquiries desk: info@nu-techassoc.co.uk

Nu-Tech will be working with Westinghouse in providing a supplier exhibition in September 2016 to support their current and upcoming needs. These will focus on products and equipment typically associated with process, chemical and manufacturing technology.
